A lot of people find it strange, our honeymoon is a working holiday. And we don’t know for how long it will be, but here we go! Time to explore New Zealand. Country on the other side of the world, for me that is…
At 4 AM the alarm went off. We rush to get our last stuff sorted and hop in a taxi to Sydney Airport. On the flight to Auckland we fill out a whole questionnaire about everything we are taking into the country. I have never seen such a strict check. On arrival we even had to pull out our tent to be examined.
Auckland is quite a small city and while exploring and trying to get some things sorted, like getting sim cards, we felt like we went back in time. There are only a few, quite expensive mobile phone providers. To call to Europe you have to buy a phone card! And we got ID-ed in the supermarket when we bought a bottle of wine.
After a great sleep in a hostel dorm that we had all to ourselves, we woke op to a sunny Auckland the next morning. We decided to walk up Mt Eden, the highest volcano in Auckland, to get a good view over the city and its surroundings.
In the afternoon we bought a ‘Lonely Planet’. I love having a guide and we have heard wifi is a bit behind here in New Zealand so a book might come in handy. We ended the day with a Pasta Carbonara and a bottle of wine. Oef, the wine is expensive here! And all the cheapest bottles are from Australia, South Africa or Chile.
