The earthquake in February 2011 has destroyed big parts of Christchurch. And today, 3 years later, you can still see the results. In some parts of the city it feels like it happened only a few weeks ago. Starbucks looks exactly the same as any other Starbucks, only covered in dust and plaster and pieces of the ceiling and walls. And a little dead mouse that couldn’t escape in time. The jeans shop next door still has all the merchandise hanging on the racks, the sale tables still piled high with clothes.
There are also a lot of random parking lots around the city, where buildings used to be. But on the other end of the scale, there are lots of artworks in the streets, quirky shops in containers and cool little art galleries.
Christchurch, a city full of life
When we came through Christchurch months ago I got the impression of a sad, lifeless city. But in the one day we spent there this time, my view on Christchurch has changed completely. It’s a city full of life, courage and new ideas.
