Fairlie is a town in the MacKenzie District of the Canterbury region on the South Island. It has just over 700 inhabitants, 2 pubs, a small supermarket and a hardware shop/postoffice. And a Holiday Park, which is where we will be working for 2 months. The Fairlie Top 10 Holiday Park.

The cheapest bus company in New Zealand is called Nakedbus. What’s in a name you wonder?
From Hastings we had to travel to Wellington, where we would spent the night in a hostel. We left with a delay but all went well. The Nakedbus driver was a bit odd as he was bad mouthing his colleague who would drive the second part of the journey, but ok. The supposedly “grumpy colleague” seemed cheerful enough and drove without stops so we could make up for the delay and arrive on time. We were starving when we could finally see the city lights of Wellington. It was close to 10PM. Suddenly the bus lost speed and before we knew it, it had to pull up on the side of the highway. Turned out we were completely out of fuel! After the bus driver made several phone calls to his company and almost an hour of sitting around in a dark bus with the traffic raging past, we were finally supplied with fuel and got back on the road again.

From Auckland we made a dash straight down to Hastings, in Hawke’s Bay. Since we had spent most of our money on our wedding in Australia, it was time for “Plan A”. Fruit picking. It sounds so romantic doesn’t it? Being outside, in the sunshine, picking fruit.
