2017 was a year full of challenges for us. It sure wasn’t an easy one but with perseverance and hard work we managed to end the year with a good 3,5 months of travelling and visited 13 countries in total. Some of those are countries we always come back to, some of them were countries we had never been before and some were countries we wanted to explore more of. Here is our year in photos.
We started the year in the country we left off in 2016, Belgium. A cold windy winter afternoon stroll on the beach to clear our heads. – Blankenberge, Belgium.
The country that posed many challenges, England. An old priory stands tall in the meadows, catching the evening sun. – Ripley, England.
The country that always holds a part of our hearts. Relishing the autumn sunshine while exploring the Andalusian countryside with family. – Fernán Pérez, Andalusia, Spain.
A new country for Toby, Portugal was so much fun to explore. From colourful ceramic tiles to small local bars, grilled seafood and stunning coastline. Nazaré was one of our favourite places to drink in the fresh ocean air and golden hour sunshine. – Nazaré, Portugal.
Of course we had to pay a visit to The Netherlands. We had a great time with old and new friends and ate all the Dutch specialties like this delicious “broodje kroket”. – Amersfoort, The Netherlands.
A very special country to visit was Latvia. New to both of us, it is the country where Toby’s family is from. We loved strolling through the Central Market in Riga, exploring castles in the countryside and we even got to meet relatives for the first time! This photo is of the Central Market, created from old zeppelin hangars. – Riga, Latvia.
Another new country was Lithuania. We explored the streets of Vilnius, the capital city and hiked up to a view point in the rain. It was a very cold and wet visit but the streets in the centre still looked colourful. – Vilnius, Lithuania.
Poland pleasantly surprised us. From pastel coloured fairytale houses on old squares to modern architecture and everything in between. The vodka in so many different flavours kept us warm. – Warsaw, Poland.
We finally made it back to Berlin after too many years. We walked past our old flat in Neukölln where we lived in 2011/2012, strolled through hip Kreuzberg and caught up with friends. – Berlin, Germany.
We flew from Germany to Bangkok. It was our third visit to this hectic Thai metropolis. And we loved it more than before. We discovered a new neighbourhood with amazing street food and people working all different trades. The man on this photo worked on engine parts in a street that was totally dedicated to everything that had to do with car parts. – Bangkok, Thailand.
The best sunrise of 2018 for us was on the island of Koh Rong. We kind of fell in love with Cambodia last year so we wanted to go back and explore the coastline and islands. It was an amazing trip and we sure fell deeper in love with this beautiful country and lovely people. – Koh Rong, Cambodia.
The first time ever we saw tea plantations. We spent Christmas in the lush green hills of the Cameron Highlands where we hiked in the jungle and admired the bright green of the tea plants. Malaysia was once again a wonderful adventure of street food, nature (I also did my first ever Scuba dive!), architecture and street art. – Tanah Rata, Cameron Highlands, Malaysia
Another one that has been ticked off the bucket list. The New Years fireworks in Sydney. This is where we start 2018. A new year with new goals! – Sydney, Australia.
